I would divide companies into two general categories: one kind of company develops software as its main product (e.g., Microsoft, Google) and another kind of company where software only supports the business processes of the company (e.g., auto manufacturers, banks, and insurance companies). I call the software development in the former kind of company research and development (R&D) and the latter information technology (IT).
