I'd disagree here. The default for phpbb (by FAR the most commonly used forum software) is 80x80. I'd have to say many, many forums use 80x80.

Why are we fannying about with 80x80 when we can just go for photobucket or imageshack hosting?

Of course, we need to set a reasonable limit. We don't want any giant freak SMBC avatars wandering the forum world, laying waste and destruction to all they survey.

On second thought, we do want that. 2000x2000, anyone?

The transition from 96x96 to 80x80 was immense. The drop in quality is like the drop from a huge cliff which tucker* throws himself off to escape his fat mum and homosexuality.

some forums allow you to have pictures in your signature, and making smbc sigs is easir than making smbc avatars..that is all.
