I'm curious, what forum did you emigrate from that allowed anybody to pick their own Rank without earning one? I ask because it might also help explain your (unintentional, I'm sure) trollish behaviour.

I recall you mentioning Literotica, but a quick browse tells me that their rank system is closely linked wih Postcount, thus making me uncertain with regards to which forum you are speaking of.

Trollish behavior? Can you elaborate? Because I in no way have been a troll, in my opinion. In fact, I'm rather offended that you said that.

Literotica only has predetermined ranks until you reach like 250 or 500 posts (I can't remember). Then you get to pick your own user title and change it as often as you want. Dryerlint, an invite-only forum, you can pick your title as soon as you sign up.

I figured that you did not believe your behaviour to be reminiscent of Trolling, which is why I made certain to tell you that I believed it to be unintentional. As for your taking offense, I can only assure you that it was not my intent for that to happen.

Ah! The only predetermined rank we have is the one that tells us that a person is eligible for a Custom Rank. While technically there is no rule against changing your Custom Rank, there is no hard-coded way for users to do so at-will. Thus, they must petition a Mod to make the change on their behalf. As it stands, this system is one hell of a lot better than it used to be (i.e. you get a title by petitioning Zach for one, back when he would go months at a time without logging in to the Forum), but as with anything there is room for improvement.

We use the phpBB forum software as opposed to vBulletin of Literotica, which may also explain the different Rank style. I suspect that the Dryerlint forum you mentioned also uses software different from ours. So really, it's not something that us lowly Members can do anything about.
astasia wrote:Trollish behavior? Can you elaborate?
Certainly! Keep in mind, this is all my interpretation of posts, not some vindictive tirade against you as a person. However, some background on this Forum would likely help you understand why I am interpreting your posts the way I am.

While we have a membership numbering in the thousands, this Forum has only had about a dozen people regularly posting at any one time. As a result, we have gotten to know each other quite well, and many unspoken rules are agreed upon. While occasionally counter-intuitive (read: 'weird' or 'f**ked-up'), they at least provide some semblance of structure. I shall attempt to set the rules down in this post, but it is by no means a complete list, nor is it even guaranteed to be accurate.
  1. Keep it PG-13, Fuckers
MPAA wrote:A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category. The theme of the motion picture by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13, although depictions of activities related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the motion picture. Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous.

  11. Don't be a jackass
  12. Don't take anything personally. We all read this comic and thus have a bent sense of humour.
Breaking of these rules is Trollish behaviour, which is quite highly frowned upon. Really, it's the First, Eighth, Eleventh, and Twelfth rules that people have been breaking of late, and thus leading to the claim of Troll behaviour. At least, I assume those are the only rules being broken, although Ashe seems to be taking a rather pro-infant stand at the moment...

I don't think you're a troll Astasia. I don't really think you're even acting like one. You have made some controversial posts, but I think your intentions are good. You don't seem to be aiming simply to get a reaction. Instead, you seem genuinely interested in the conversation and the responses you receive.

I'm willing to guess that Ed considers my behavior trollish also though. He accused me of breaking rule number 11, although that was only after 7 posts. He has since told me that my post quality has improved. I'm trying so hard to please him... Please like me Ed.

Both of the other boards I've been a part of have had progressive titles for post count milestones. With the exception of admins, and sometimes mods (and sometimes whoever the admin or mod deemed worthy).

Edit: Canadia. I thought so. You clever buggers. I thought I was losing my mind. I thought I had made that typing mistake a bunch. I thought it was funny and didn't go to correct it, but I couldn't believe I made that mistake that often. Now I see.

Yeah, I set up that wordfilter weeks ago, to see if anyone would notice. You're the first one to say anything.

I seldom re-read my posts after submitting, but rather do it before. And quick reading would seldom pick up on that 'i' in other posts. Really I just thought it was becoming a bit of a board norm to spell it as such.

Also, in regard to this thread (the first post, really), I think you can understand that we might get a bit uppity with you calling our community lame. Even if you were really referencing one small part of it.

I really like this forum, even though I don't post as much as everyone else, so saying that it's lame is a little bit hurtful. Speaking of titles, do I have to PM a mod to get one or can I just come right out and say it in a thread?

What the hell?

I didn't make this a thread.

Nor would I have titled it this.

It makes me look more like a troll when some mod makes a thread for me called "this forum is lame."

I think that is lame.

Thanks.

I just figured that discussing controversial subjects wasn't really off-limits. I assumed that, from what it appeared like, that intelligent people post at this forum. Intelligent people are much more fun to discuss controversial topics with.

As for being a troll, really, I didn't know the unspoken forum rules (that, were, just actually written out for me, so, I guess calling them unspoken is stupid), and neither did I think that not realizing that I couldn't swear makes me a troll. I guess I have a more extreme idea of what a troll is.

One more thing -

If I thought the whole forum was lame, I wouldn't post here. So, once again, putting that that's what I said, is not accurately representing my feelings, nor is it fair.

Obviously, it's just that one part that I don't like. And, I think it's being awfully touchy and sensitive for people to be upset because I do not like the title system.

Damn it Astasia! Why do you hate this forum? We try our best to be accommodating and you spit and throw it back in our collective faces. You come here, trolling us with your opinions and hateful comments and how are we supposed to respond? With warm arms? I think not.

Also, making a thread called "This Forum is the worst Forum ever" isn't a good way to make friends.
