I heard something on the radio this morning, some wacky celeb talking about how she celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving. "It's almost like real Thanksgiving, guys!" or something like that. Totally ridiculous.

Thanksgiving was a political holiday to unite the country during the "brother against brother" mindset of the Civil War. That is why you don't have it.

Actually Canadian Thanksgiving originated mostly in Canadia. There were aboriginal tribes that celebrated the harvest every year. Frobisher celebrated what's considered Canadia's first thanksgiving in Newfoundland in 1578 when he made it back alive from his search for the North West Passage (Something his predecessors didn't quite manage). The French in Quebec began celebrating a feast of thanks too every year since they arrived (1608) because Samuel the Champlain was happy to have made it alive and they would share this feast with the aboriginals.* Then when the loyalists** came up during the War of Independence they brought their thanksgiving traditions with them and what we celebrate today is a mix of all of these.

*actually the French got along very well with the Huron historically. They were close allies and both mortal enemies of the Iroquois. Of course it helped that the aboriginals of the area easily outnumbered the small French settlement that were there at the time
