Dammit I just can't help thinking "tosser" whenever I see someone wearing one.

Not sure what you mean, but on Halloween I wore a Power Rangers helmet that made me look like a smurf. Don't wear aluminum hats. They cause headaches. I also have a coat with a hood that makes me look like a dementor/grim reaper/gnome/Gandalf/negative-KKK member.

Actually I was thinking of "Conspiracy Theorist" for my costume next year. I would wear clothes entirely made out of foil. But I don't think I could deal with the pain.

You can get silver material that looks pretty metalic. My sister was the Tin Man in a stage production of 'The Wiz' and she wore something made of this silver material with more solid cardboard bits over the knee caps etc. So you can always just get cardboard and spray paint it silver as well. There are lots of options. Don't give up on this idea. I want to see's me a photo!

You could just cover clothes with it. Even in such a way that it looks like it was made of it (i.e., wrap it into the cuffs/collars/etc.), though that would still cause some discomfort (around the neck, particularly) but it would be it would be easier and more comfortable.
You'd need a lot of tape, though, to keep it in decent shape throughout the evening.
