A post-apocalyptic sci-fi story: Solace

For original creative work. For the love of Zach, read Rule 30.

A post-apocalyptic sci-fi story: Solace

Post by wolf »

A friend of mine is writing an original story and would love feedback it's called Solace. http://invalidreality.wordpress.com/ What is it about? Fine.
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Drama/Romance/Suspense/Supernatural (you name she's got it)
Summary: In a post-apocalyptic world, love is hard to come across when there is no hope left for life to return to normal. But what happens when one finds hope and love in the last place they had ever thought they would find it? A whirlwind romance in a world left with no hope for a future is all one needs to believe there is a future out there, and hope in a world full of darkness, violence, and things you only ever believed existed in your deepest, darkest dreams.

So come on arseholes do me a favour read and feedback. http://invalidreality.wordpress.com/

It reads about as well as any romance novel I've read, so I guess if your friend is aspiring to mediocrity then good job? My advice is to drop the NC-17 goal, get rid of the romance subplot, and just make it straight-up survival in an uncaring world. Either that or be honest and admit that the goal is to write terrible porn, I'm not picky.

First chapter seems decent enough.

Do you honestly think I'd write anything with romance in it? Really? Pretty sure mine would be full of dead babies.... I like that idea really. But no it is a friend that asked me to appeal to my nerd friends and I thought of you guys.

MY advice is that a few of the sentences seemed to ramble, especially when talking about the surroundings. That's just my style however.

I would add a couple of metaphors: post-apocalyptic writing > Empty Metaphors and Apocalyptic Rhetoric by Tom Thatcher. According to Simplicable, there are 16 types of metaphors. But I wouldn't add allegory, hyperbole and simile to that list. I analyzed dying metaphors in the linguistics course (studying conceptual metaphors and dying metaphors comparing their vividness in texts) for my college research last year. Now, I'm writing a fiction narrative analysis.
