I sewed a thing!

So I went and picked up some sewing supplies last week, since I haven't actually owned a needle and thread since before I moved out.

I made these:

Image

They were advertised as an e-reader bag (the drawstring bag for it's charger), and the pattern was free, so I figurd it was a good place to see if I still knew what the hell I was doing.

Then I made another one for my mom because she asked for one for her kobo:

Image

I basically stuck to the same pattern, except this time I made it a functional button (I didn't take a picture, but the other one has velcro to hold the flap down, the button is purely decorative), and obviously I sewed on a couple of felt cats that I made, since my mom really loves cats. Oh, and I added a little pouch on the inside for her charger instead of the drawstring bag:

My mom wanted the sparkly button inside. Image

I got lucky, I found a really good pattern online to use. It's all hand sewn (which is great because I do not own a sewing machine), and pretty basic, straight forward directions. And the bags are the right size (my kindle was in the orange one when I took the picture). It was a pretty good project for getting back into it. I still have the pattern saved if anyone else wants to try it.

All in all, not bad for the first thing I've sewn in over a decade. I was more expecting something that looked like a 13 year old's first home ec project. Next I want to make a pin cushion since the only pin cushions you can buy here are the tomato-strawberry ones, but I had trouble finding the stuffing I wanted, so I had to order it online. So I'm probably going to just take a little while off before I develop a crick in my neck while I wait for that to arrive. Anyways, that's been what I've been doing the past few days.

Awesome stuff! The most interesting sewing I have been doing lately is just patches on clothes. Although I did make a kobo case out of an actual book awhile ago. I don't use it anymore because I have a new one that is a different size, but I was quite fond of it. Unfortunately I can't find any photos of it right now though.

Thanks all!

So my self-imposed sewing break lasted right up until it occurred to me that I could sew a hat with animal ears if I wanted to. I bought the fleece at lunch today, and just finished about 10 minutes ago.

and how it looks on my head:

Totally worth any neck cricks I may develop. Image

Now I am definitely done sewing at least until I figure out how I can make a panda bear hat.

That's positively adorable. But is it warm enough for Canadia or do you need to add a lining?

The hat is really good.

One of my friends is crocheting me a beard hat. Hopefully it'll be finished before deep winter sets in here in the southeastern US.

I'm making a pin cushion. It will become the worlds largest pin cushion. It's got no choice now. It's more than half finished. I really expected it to be smaller though. Clearly I didn't follow a direction properly.

It looks like you really nailed that hat. Glad you posted the second picture, or else the success wouldn't have been as clear. Or at least to me, the least sewingest person in the world.

Thanks all. :)

It should be good as is. Though I have warmer hats that will cover my ears better if I'm ever going to be out in really cold weather for a prolonged period of time.

I look forward to seeing the final product! Also I'm pretty sure big is a good thing when it comes to pin cushions. :)

Oh that is cool. I've seen some pretty nice patterns for crochet animal hats. Unfortunately I don't crochet at all, so I'm stuck with just admiring them from afar.

I made a panda hat:

Kind of a crappy picture, but I'm kind of exhausted.

Man, what kind of crappy witch can't predict the future? Maybe she isn't actually a Bride of Satan, guys.

Although those hats are bewitchingly good...
