[2011-Nov-19] Terrible Graph Joke
Comic: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db ... 2436#comic
This graph joke is bad and you should feel graphically bad!
It is stupid and untrue. Nerds lives do not get any better, especially extroverted ones. A complete fabrication! Where is the evidence?! NOT FUNNY! BOOOO!!!!
/throws tomatoes at Zach
I demand a new comic!

It's an extreme disappointment, even for a graph joke, yes.

Zach, if you can't think of a joke, save your accumulated funny for the day and use it for an extra funny joke tomorrow.

I didn't get this joke, or maybe there's nothing to get.
Would someone mind explaining the 'funny' in this comic to me?

Nerds falsely believe their lives at some point get better than normal people's.papadopus wrote:I didn't get this joke, or maybe there's nothing to get.

If anything, nerds tend to have worse lives as time goes on with ever decreasing healthcare, investment returns, and social networks. Things get really bad if they have a family and the son starts beating up homeless people in gangs while the daughter gives blowjobs behind the porno-theater for eight-balls.

Wow. I just... This may be my least favourite SMBC ever. There isn't a joke. Its just a useless graph that illustrates the ol' "just wait nerds, things get better!" chestnut.
Awful.
Awful.

I think zachs opinion is skewed because he is a successful comic artist. This is like eminem singing about living on the streets. No. Nerd lives don't get better. Our lives suck. And for us poor semi-nerds who don't even quite make the cut? It gets worse still. I think our peak is at 20 or so, before we realize the world really is a cruel horrible place and all those people who said things get better we're lying.

Many nerds turn out to be serial killers.

My life's pretty good, and has been improving steadily since it wasn't all that great.

Re: [2011-Nov-19] Terrible Graph Joke
I've just turned 20 and life has been on the improve, so I don't know who to believe. To be honest, the improvement in my life satisfaction has more to do with me growing more confident in most aspects of my life, than anything else. I'm going to take a broad brush and say most nerds grow up with low self-esteem and lacking in self-confidence (though there are notable exceptions amongst my friends) and it really boils down to whether they can break that mold or not.

Re: [2011-Nov-19] Terrible Graph Joke
Maybe it's less of a case of "life gets better for nerds and worse for normal folks" and more of a thing like "it really fucking depends, guys". I'm sure there are more than two factors that influence life satisfaction.

Most lives suck. People just falsely think they get better.
None of us have countless harems and castles and people to wipe our bottoms. That is the example of a complete life.

Re: [2011-Nov-19] Terrible Graph Joke
One thing Zach might have been trying to joke about is the "college party" thing (which is hardly as ubiquitous as people assume, even under the already horribly inaccurate assumption that "most" 18-22 year olds are in college in the first place). "Ordinary" people are thus assumed to be getting tons of life satisfaction when they're 21 (because alcohol and sex increase life satisfaction, right?) while "nerds" barely notice and/or have less life satisfaction due to not attending said parties. Which explains the votey somewhat: "extroverted nerds" would be partyin' as teenangsters and then somehow switch to making intelligent life choices after the novelty wears off.
Re: [2011-Nov-19] Terrible Graph Joke
I took it as normal people have their crazy youth then spend the rest of their lives lamenting it, like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite. Nerds perhaps look more forward (or present day) and have less regret and aren't saddled with that.
