Worth noting that at such time scales, the speed of sound also becomes relevant. If you're in a 30 foot by 30 foot room, standing at the center, you're already taking 13.2ms to reach every wall, and well over 15ms to reach the corners. Even just following US social distancing protocols (6 feet) adds 5.3ms to your travel time.

For a symposium hall of any nontrivial size, visual stimuli are still going to kill the mood faster.

Just put a wired speaker next to every seat. Kinda like how Track&Field events realized that they had to wire the starter's gun to a speaker in every lane because winnng margins in sprint races were sub-millisecond.
