Halo Novels

Hi all,

Thought I'd pop in here to check up to see if anyone has read the Halo Novel series?

I've obtained the latest two and have the original four on order and am quite looking forward to the side-story to the Halo 'verse.
I recently started working on a Sci-Fi / Fantasy novel idea and then got my hands on the Halo Wars game. After playing through the
campaign mode and really enjoying the storyline, I got all hyped up about my story and wanted to touch base with my sci-fi roots
(I've been reading fantasy novels for a good long while now and it's refreshing to have a bit of a change).

Either way, I was wondering if there was anyone here that was a fan of the Halo universe? (insofar as the stories go, not the
games - I love the original Halo but hate the gameplay of the second and third, but this is about the books and backstory)

I will never read books based from movies. I think the entire Star Wars fiction machine is ridiculous. It is even worse when books have been adapted from the screenplay into a book. Ugh.
It stands to reason that I would not read the Halo novels. Plus I'm not even that big a fan of the Halo story.

Fair enough - I know a lot of people aren't.
I just find the whole story around the UNSC and the early struggle with the Covenant
and all the intricasies that can't be explored in the games / movie / etc. fascinating.

I just love it when someone / a team creates a story and then teams of people work on
creating an entire universe and backstory and details around that story.
There's a lot better storytelling going on in some of the offshoot stories that there ever
was in the originals, though that depends on the reader and their personal tastes.

Not contradicting ye Lethal, but just saying that from my seat I find the creativeness
that snowballs from the original idea simply amazing on some projects.
(I think Star Wars and Star Trek have been done to death, but Halo is small and new
still, so the novels will still be 'fresh' for me)

I know a friend who has been reading the Halo novels. He was quite a big fan of the video game though. I could never bring myself to pick them up myself.

Since when was there a Halo movie?

According to various sources, a movie has been slated since 2007 but has been started and stopped several times.
According to IMDB.com, it's set for a release in 2012 and Peter Jackson has said, "Don't worry. It will come."

Short films count, right? Especially when produced with the help of WETA Digital, the people who worked on LOTR?

Apparently my editing left out that if I won't watch books based on movies, that games are even less likely.

Eric Nylund's books are worth reading, because it turns out he's a really good author.

Now if only we could convince Dan Abnett to write Halo fanfiction.

I'm pretty sure that the books inspired the games. Was I lied to?

Yes, you were lied to; although I suspect the person who told you was working with faulty information. The first book (Halo: The Fall of Reach) is a prequel to the first HALO game, and was in fact printed one month before the game hit stores, but it was not the inspiration for the series as work had started on that two years prior.

Yeah, he was actually presented with The Halo Bible to help him write the novel, as well as getting to see all the game development happening, to better inform his novel.

Why would anyone read books based on the most overrated game series of all time? How could anyone take a plot so generic and make three books? Boggles the mind.

You're going from a story that's strictly visual to a book. I'm sure the story in Halo isn't all that great, but it should have SOME potential. It depends on who does the writing. I think you can make a good story on any concept, as long as you don't restrict the concept to much. For example, if I told you to write a good story on your morning ritual, some might say they just get up, shower, eat, and leave. Others could write about why they feel the need to wash their hair before their body, or why they brush their teeth twice, or something like that.
But yeah I agree with you which is why I didn't read it when someone offered me it.

They made 6 books and a movie for DOOM. The books were plain awful, but i guess there is not too much you can do with a plot that is basically "kill stuff and look for elevator". So I guess 3 books from Halo's plot is not too much of a stretch.
