Ever heard the myth/anecdote that Ring-a-ring-a-rosey was based on The Black Death?
When I took medieval History we actually learnt a bit about this. There was a religious order called the Flaggelants who were a group of people who thought that the black death was a punishment from God. So to atone for their sins they would travel from town to town wearing cowls or hoods to obscure their faces and dress in solemn clothes. They'd lead a procession carrying banners with penitential sayings and images, to the church square singing litanies. When they got the church yard they would get into a circle and take off all their clothes except a skirt that would go down to their ankles. They then proceeded to move around the circle until the leader of the group would signal they'll fall to the ground where they would take various poses depending on which sin they'd committed and the leader would come through and whip them all. Then they'd all start whipping themselves in a rhythmic fashion. They'd do this about three times a day.

The roses I've heard come from a number of places, incense would be carried around to purify and protect, people would carry posies of herbs in their pockets for protection. And plague victims often got red rashes. The ashes refers to the burning of the bodies, and the husha husha refers to a sneeze.

At least that's one interpretation. Some people think the ring around the rosie was a ring people would make around their ashes, or that falling down referred to the fact that everyone died. You know scholars, they like to argue.

Other nursery rhymes with secret meanings? Mary Mary Quite Contrary is about Mary Queen of Scotts, and Sing a Song of Sixpence is about Pirates.

The song 'Hot Cross Buns' is about the holocaust.

Yankee doodle is an insult, and sung ironically.
Also, the pledge of allegiance is a satanic ritual that I do not participate in, even though it is illegal not to do so.
Just like an std, will never fully go away.

I seem to recall Snopes being the originator of that rumour. I know it's listed as truth in The Repository of Lost Legends (TRoLL), which is an automatic red flag that they're lying.

Further research reveals to me that this is indeed true. My whole world has just been turned on its head! What else have I been lied to about?

Actually what I find odd is that I got this from a completely different source, which makes me wonder if someone came across it on Snopes and thought it was true or what was going on there. (Also a really old source, this is something I heard when I was like 12)

Replace the third line with 'fingerbang an Orangutan' and the fourth with 'it's an orgy at the zoo' and you've got the version I heard.

Dude, Rainbow=13..13=8th grade. Therefore she is hearing this at exactly the correct time.

I like Rainbow's better. It has a better meter for that third line.

I know he didn't write it. As if that makes it any less hilarious. Also, heard this when I was 11, so 8th grade not.
